Osteoporosis in the European Community: Action for Prevention

Osteoporosis in the European Community. Action for PreventionThe 'Report on Osteoporosis in the European Community. Action for Prevention', published in June 1998, is a landmark publication which catalyzed action on osteoporosis throughout Europe. In addition to outlining the epidemiologic issues with country-specific predictions, the report provides an overview of bone physiology, nutritional factors related to bone health, information about the diagnosis and assessment of risk, as well as recommendations for prevention of fractures and for the management of patients with osteoporosis.

Most significantly, the report provides eight recommendations which, if followed at the national level, would significantly reduce the current and future burden of osteoporosis within Europe.

The European Parliament (EP) played a key role in initiating the report which resulted from a collaboration of the European Commission (EC) and IOF with working group meetings of experts on osteoporosis. The European Community (now European Union) provided essential financial and practical support for the production, launch and dissemination of materials, particularly to promote the eight recommendations. The EP also provided the venue for the highly successful report launch meeting and press conference.
