Outstanding research by young investigators receives recognition at IOF Regionals 5th Asia-Pacific Osteoporosis Meeting.

Today, researchers from Australia, Hong Kong/China, Malaysia, and Singapore received the International Osteoporosis Foundation’s (IOF) Young Investigators Awards, presented at the IOF Regionals – 5th Asia-Pacific Osteoporosis Meeting in Taipei.

The award winning studies, submitted by investigators aged forty years or younger, were selected from more than 150 abstract submissions to the Meeting. The Award comprises 1000 USD, a certificate, and the opportunity to present the research at a high profile oral communications session.

IOF CEO Judy Stenmark, stated,

We’re very pleased to recognize the noteworthy research of young investigators by offering these prestigious awards. IOF hopes this recognition will help encourage these young investigators - the region’s scientific leaders of the future - to continue their important work in advancing knowledge of bone, muscle and joint disorders.”

The five award winning abstracts and presenting authors are:

  • Quantification of the Heterogeneity of Cortical Porosity and the Effect on Strength (OC7) A Zendeli (University of Melbourne, Australia)
  • Sedentary Time Negates the Positive Influence of Moderate-to-vigorous  Physical Activity but not Vigorous Physical Activity on Bone Strength in Adolescent Girls (OC8) VPS Tan (University Of British Columbia/ Universiti Sains Malaysia/Child & Family Research Institute, Vancouver)
  • Projection of Incidence and Economic Burden of Osteoporosis-related Fractures in China: 2010-2050 (OC9) L Si (University of Tasmania, Australia)
  • Association Between Body Weight Change and Risk of Hip Fracture Among Singapore Chinese (OC10) Z Dai (National University of Singapore)
  • Early Hip Fracture Surgery Reduces One-year Mortality and Improves Long-term Survival in Southern Chinese (OC11) Y. K. Yeung (Caritas Medical Centre, Hong Kong )

Abstracts have been published in the scientific journal Osteoporosis International, Volume 25, Suppl. 5, 2014.

IOF Regionals 5th Asia-Pacific Osteoporosis Meeting

Organized by IOF and the Taiwanese Osteoporosis Foundation, the 5th Asia-Pacific Osteoporosis Meeting is being held in Taipei from November 14-16, 2014 at the Taipei International Convention Centre. The IOF Regionals have been a key educational and research forum in the Asia-Pacific region since 2010. Past Meetings have been held in Hong Kong, Kuala Lumpur, Australia, and Singapore. The 6th IOF Regionals Asia-Pacific Meeting is planned in Singapore in November 2016.
