WCO-IOF-ESCEO Malaga 2016: a continued success story

Opening ceremony at WCO-IOF-ESCEO 2016 in Malaga, Spain
With more than 3800 registrants and a record number of abstracts, the annual IOF and ESCEO Congress is continually setting new standards and raising the bar as the largest congress in the bone, muscle and joint field.

The World Congress on Osteoporosis,Osteoarthritis and Musculoskeletal Diseases (WCO-IOF-ESCEO 2016) was a huge success and surpassed expectations with 3817 registrants and a record number of submitted abstracts.

The high quality of the abstracts made it a challenge for the Scientific Advisory Committee, co-chaired by Professors René Rizzoli and Cyrus Cooper, to select oral presentations among the 1259 submissions.

The final programme included:

  • 9 Stimulating plenary lectures on various ‘hot’ topics delivered by the fields’ leading experts;
  • 15 Clinically-focused Meet-the-Expert Sessions, restricted in the number of participants to enable more effective interactions;
  • A large number of special sessions such as the Educational Lecture, Oral Communications of Selected Posters, ESCEO Symposia, or the Committee of National Societies Special Plenary session;
  • 16 Non-sponsored workshops selected by a panel chaired by the Scientific Chairs of the Congress, and endorsed according to their topicality and quality;
  • 51 oral communications selected from outstanding abstracts, 20 oral presentations of selected posters;
  • 910 Posters, presented in scheduled sessions;
  • 6 satellite symposia – their programmes were carefully reviewed by the organizors to make sure that an appropriate amount of unbiased science was outlined;
  • 596 people awarded prizes, fellowships, scholarships and awards,: the largest number ever awarded at any congress.! Awards included the ESCEO Medal of Excellence, ESCEO-IOF Herbert Fleisch Medal, ESCEO-MSD Fellowships, IOF President’s Award,  IOF Medal of Achievement, ESCEO-AgNovos Healthcare Young Investigator Awards,  IOF Committee of National Societies Medal, IOF Johnell Science Award, IOF-ESCEO Pierre Meunier Young Scientist Awards and the ESCEO-Eli Lilly Scholarships;
  • A large and busy exhibition area allowed delegates to mingle and view the latest products and services from leading companies in the musculoskeletal field between the many programme sessions.

Planning for the next WCO-IOF-ESCEO Congresses to be held in Florence, Italy on March 23-26, 2017 is well underway and has begun for the 2018 Congress to be held in Krakow, Poland on April 19-22, 2018 at the ICE Congress Centre.
