"It never occurred to me that my back pain was due to osteoporosis.

Carmen Solis, PeruFour years ago I was diagnosed with osteoporosis. Today I am 71 years old and I want to thank my doctor for knowing the importance of the early treatment and the consequences of this silent "epidemic".

I started having intense pain in my back but it never occurred to me that it was due to osteoporosis. My doctor told me that I should have a bone density test and thanks to that I became aware of my illness. At first I was shocked since I have been a healthy person my whole life. I do not drink nor smoke and when I was younger I loved playing basketball. However, when I started to read and inform myself about the illness I realized the little importance I gave to dairy products, especially milk which I do not like at all. Today, thanks to my doctor’s advice I have learned how to replace milk with yoghurt and cheese, and to complement those with daily supplements of calcium. Although my back is not cured and I cannot walk without an orthopedic corset, I try to make the effort and walk at least a few blocks every day.

I recommend to everyone to listen to their doctor and pay attention to the advice he or she gives because osteoporosis is a silent disease that is impossible to detect and treat unless we are very well informed."
